main_oct4KISSES TO YOU!!  And if you’re reading this, welcome to the very first edition of FRENCH KISS FRIDAY!  Every Friday, you can look forward to a new lip product swatch and review.  The succulent lips you’re looking at, in that beautiful berry shade–those are MY lips!  I can finally say…I’m a model!  The juicy color I’m wearing is…Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar in Strumpet.  This is not a new shade.  And Lip Tar isn’t exactly new to the beauty scene.  But we’re currently experiencing Indian Summer here in Pennsylvania, even though the season is officially autumn.  And Strumpet, in my opinion, is a gorgeous color to wear as we transition from summer into fall.

I’ve always liked makeup, but it was only a few years ago that I realized makeup application is an art.  And while there are plenty of beauty deals and steals in your local drugstores and supermarkets, on the whole–you get what you pay for.  Where once upon a time I used to turn my nose up at the “spendy” stuff, now I’m happy to drop some cash on quality product.

(Edit:  Now I fantasize about dropping cash on quality product…as of this moment Ron is still looking for a job and after a 10 month, soul-sucking stint in the educational supply and specialty toy retail niche, I need to be home tending to my family and hoping maybe blogging can become a full time career for me.)

Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics crept onto my radar when they teamed up with drag queens Detox Icunt, Willam Belli, and Vicky Vox earlier this year for the Celebrity Drag Queen Collection of Lip Tar and nail polish duos.

I first heard of the cosmetic company/drag queen collaboration shortly after I had the pleasure of meeting Detox at Voyeur Nightclub in Philadelphia.

IMG_20130428_222159(Every time I tell anyone that I’ve met Detox, I always tell them that she smelled amazing and absolutely delicious!  I’ve never met a “smelly” drag queen, though!  Since everyone’s body chemistry is different, people wear fragrances differently…whatever Detox was wearing that night complemented her body chemistry perfectly!)

The Lip Tar in Detox’s OCC Collection is Strumpet, and one look is all I needed to decide it would look perfect on me.

It was in stock at my local Sephora, and I can’t even tell you how super-convenient it is that you can test anything you want before you make a purchase.  One Lip Tar costs $18, and that may be a lot of money for a lot of folks!  I keep it real, here:  because of our life circumstances right now, I cannot afford an $18 splurge.  But I do want to mention that you could buy a few lipsticks (without testing them) for $18 and there’s no guarantee you’re going to like them.

Another important thing I would like to point out about the Lip Tars:  what you see is not always what you get.  I was pretty sure I was going to love Strumpet, and I did!  But absolutely try before you have your heart set on a color, because you may not like it once it is on your lips.

Lip Tars are true to their color–to a point.  A large portion of their shades are not typical choices for nearly all the Moms I know.  Makeup artists embrace (and collect) hot, trendy shades.  And Moms–come on–you know you have a couple drug store brands around, somewhere…  Probably in the same shade family…  Just look at any mom in the preschool pickup line.  Chances are, she’s not wearing neon pink on her lips.

Lip Tars are so, so heavily pigmented, which is another reason why I’m advising my Stay At Home or Working Mom readers to test them before they have their heart set on a color or two.  When you put it on…you are going to experience a POP of color unlike anything you’ve tried before.

Strumpet turned out to be a great choice for me.  Sephora describes it as a “seedless grape red.”  I think that’s a very accurate description.  It’s grape.  Not Artificial Color Lollipop Grape…but refreshing, crunchy grape Grape.

Strumpet dries matte, which I love.  Trends come and go, but matte lips always have a special place in my heart.  Use a tiny bit, and blend it out with the brush that comes with it.  If your lips feel dry, you can use some gloss or balm over it.  Other reviews I have read mention that the Lip Tar was drying…to be honest, I have never felt like my lips were excessively dry when using it.

Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics are vegan and 100% cruelty free, too!

Since my Strumpet purchase, I have added three other Lip Tars to my collection…but those will be revealed on another French Kiss Friday!

Have you tried Strumpet or any of OCC’s other Lip Tars?  Leave me a comment below!  Any particular lipstick brands/shades you would like to see me review in an upcoming French Kiss Friday?  Let me know!
